River Oats

Chasmanthium latifolium           syn. Uniola latifolia

Description

Grows 2’ to 3’ high by 2’ to 3’ wide. Sea Oat like seed heads produced in summer and persist through early winter.

Landscape Use

Prefect for wet, shady areas where little else will grow. Will self seed on moist soil.

Culture

Prefers part shade, will tolerate full shade. Grow in a wide range of soils – prefers moist areas. Tolerates flooding. Drought tolerant once established.

Wildlife Value

Provides cover, and seeds are eaten by birds in winter.

Native Habitat and Range

River Oats grows in riverbanks and in bottomland forests, and is common throughout most of the eastern United States.
